Moving & First-Month Checklist

1. Change the locks and garage codes Day one. You have no idea how many copies of the old keys exist.
2. Locate the main water shutoff and breaker panel Find them before you need them at 2am.
3. Replace furnace filter and test smoke/CO detectors Fresh filter, fresh batteries, note the detector expiration dates.
4. File your change of address USPS forwarding, plus banks, employer, subscriptions, and your driver's license.
5. Set up or confirm utility accounts in your name Electric, gas, water/sewer, trash, internet.
6. Check homestead / property tax filings for your state Owner-occupied homes often qualify for a homestead classification that lowers property taxes — Minnesota included. Deadlines apply; check your county's.
7. Store your closing packet somewhere safe Deed, Closing Disclosure, title policy — you'll want these at tax time and beyond.
8. Understand your first mortgage payment date It's usually not the month right after closing — check your first payment letter, and set up autopay.
9. Watch the mail for official-looking junk New homeowners get bombarded with scary-official offers to sell you copies of your own deed. Recycle them.
10. Save our number Questions about your loan, your escrow, or a refinance down the road — the team is here long after closing day.
